Blu Artistry Makeup Class

I decided to have a makeup class on March 4th in Charlotte, NC for CIAA. Although 8 people reserved seats for the makeup class only 2 showed up. Although pretty disappointed that people would reserve spots and not show up like that, we continued on with the class. There were door prizes to win free MAC makeup, food and a little Moscato and Plum wine to wash the refreshments down.
In this class, I showed my students how to go from Simple Beauty to Diva Beautiful. I apologize for the limited number of pics to show you, but we were having so much fun, I forgot to take pictures during the class. I wanted to get before and afters pics of my students and everything, but we all were so eager to began. I began showing them how to apply foundation and concealer where needed, using different types of brush options. They were asking questions about what shade of concealer would be best for them and what brands would be best. They also asked if foundation was even necessary.(Some people do not like a lot of foundation). All of my answers varied due to the students desired look.
The two ladies you see below were really into the color pink, so after showing them how to create an enhanced natural beauty look, I allowed them to pick out colors that they would love to see on. One girl loved a blue eyeshadow she found and wanted to mix the blue with natual brown shadows. She decided that she wanted to do a pink lip, inspired by Nikki Minaj, so I helped her find the perfect lip shade to match her blue eyeshadow choice.  The second girl found a pink eyeshadow that she liked, but wanted her eyes more smokey, and completed her look with a pink lip as well. It was her first time trying a smokey look, so she was a little nervous. She did not want her eyes to look to dark. I adivsed her that all because you smokey doesn't mean you have to use black eyeshadow. I showed her various eyeshadow colors that she could use to smoke an eye, and guided her to use a deep navy blue color. I showed them both varoious types of blushes and adivsed them on how a little blush can really bring the eye and lips together for as a completed look.  I worked with them both one-on-one so that learning blending and application was less stressful and more fun. Below are picks of how their makeup turned out. As you see, they loved it!

My Latest Shoot with Pop Artist YaZa!!!!

YaZa is one of my favorite type of client to work with, in reference to her personality! She has a fun personality, always ready for a good laugh, and knows how to entertain!!! She also loves crazy makeup! I have never done a natural look on her that I can remember. Every look she prefers is bold, colorful, and clean! I usually try to make the lip calm so that her eyes can pop and have all the attention.
YaZa is always always so appreciative of her makeup and always lets me do whatever! Take a look at the pics below. I took them while she was at her shoot. This shoot is for her upcoming website!!! Make sure you follow her and I on twitter @Ya_Za and @bluartistry.... Enjoy!!!

This shoot was done in Nashville, TN on Clinton St. Which is around the corner from Meharry and Fisk University. The photographers that assisted her on the shoot was, Sergio, who is based out of Nashville. She also had others there to help assist her.
Below are previous pictures of work I did on Ya Za. Hope you like it!!!

Why does your makeup leave me speechless??? Not in a good way...

I was joking around on facebook and came across this add. The add was promoting a website that exposed horrible choices people made in applying their makeup. The website is www.yourmakeupsucks.com It made me laugh a little, but then it hurt my feelings. I mean can't you look in the mirror and tell that you face is not on point? Can't you look in the mirror and see that that color makes you look worst or doesn't match with what you have on.
I posted one of the pics on the website to give you an idea of what you will find on the site. Believe me...it gets worst... *SAD*

Where is your beauty... On the INSIDE or the OUTSIDE?

What's behind the Gloss and Glamour? When you take off your makeup and look in the mirror what do you see? I remember doing this exercise a long time ago in college. When I looked in the mirror I began to cry at what I saw, because I did not recognize that person. I saw all the friends that I hung with and folks I admired and tried to be like, but I couldn't find me. I was cursing up a storm, drinking, smoking, wearing skimpy clothing and walking with a "this DVIA is better than you" attitude. Who I was being was making my spirit restless. I became depressed and wondered how to fix it.
What did I end up doing? I separated myself from the clicks I hung with and began hanging out with myself. I went grocery shopping by myself and even to the movies by myself. I also got rid of the cheap makeup and clothes my friends picked out for me. I even combed out my hair of curls and brushed it into a ponytail until I could figure out the way I wanted it styled. I went to different church services as my friends, so I could pay attention and not have to join in their laughter while listening to them pick on other members in the church. I decided to explore the world for myself, rather than the world within my friends. I wanted to know what true beauty felt and looked like.
I turned on the radio one day and I heard the sweet sounds of India Arie. Her music felt so different from what I was use to listening to. I began to smile and sway my head to her melodies and realize that I was beginning to feel what it was like to be "happy" on my own. So, I decided to listen to Rock and Pop music and saw that I liked that too. I opened myself up to more Gospel and contemporary music and even found a love in Jazz and Blues. Who knew that I didn't have to go anywhere to find happiness? It was in me this whole time. I just couldn't see it over other people's images that was attached to me. Once I stripped myself of their image, I found mine. I began going clothes shopping and to restaurants by myself and whatever made me smile, I grabbed. Whether it was a pair of heels, some Timberland boots, a knitted hat, or loose jeans, I grabbed it. I also went to the beauty shop and sat there for a while looking in hair magazines that didn't include celebrities. I found a hairstyle and ended up cutting my hair, that once flowed down my back, really short and LOVED it. It was easier to manage and once again, made me smile! I also, went to the MAC counter and let them do my face different ways and found makeup colors that I liked. I then began to notice my friends asking me makeup questions. Kinda funny... I use to follow the trend and now I am setting a few.
So the question remains.... Where is your beauty? Is it on the INSIDE or the OUTSIDE? My conclusion is, once you find it on the inside, it shows on the outside. God Bless...

My experience working beside Celebrity Makeup Artist, JK Hunter, for the 2011 Stellar Awards

I had been praying for the chance to provide makeup services for the Stellar Awards, and it finally came true! I met a barber, Keno Hill, who works with Celebrity Makeup Artist, JK Hunter (out of Nashville), at a New Years Eve Party. I conversed with him during the party and we discussed me coming to his new barber shop, located in, downtown Nashville. After advising him of my goals, in reference to working the 2011 Stellar Awards, he advised that he has worked the Stellar Awards for the past 5 years. He told me that I would need to contact JK Hunter, if I wanted to get put on. So, I tried another lead that I had first, which was the production company that tapes the Stellar Awards, and it failed. When it failed, I called JK. JK said that she had already found her staff for the awards show, but to send her my resume and portfolio and she will consider using me in the future. Now, for anyone that knows me knows that I am a praying child of God. I truly believe that if God says it is for you, then it is for you. There is absolutely NOTHING a man that walks this earth can do to jeopardize it. So, I prayed and left it in God's hands. Two days before the award show, on Jan.13th, 2011, I got a call from JK asking me if I still want to do makeup for the show. At first, I was couldn't believe she called. I knew that it was ALL GOD!!! With no doubt in my mind, I accepted.
I and Thee, a hairstylist out of Atlanta, arrived to the gated entrance of the show on Jan. 15th, 2011 at 11:00am. We waited for JK to come to the gate and let us in. There we received two backstage passes and was allowed entrance. We were located in the "Glitz and Glam" room. JK made a spot for me and I began to unpack my makeup and supplies needed. We waited around until after the gospel stars were done with rehearsal before beginning to get them ready. It wasn't until about 2:30pm, when the first star walked in... Bryon Cage. Later throughout the evening other stars began to fill the room like: Marvin Sapp, The Soul Seekers, Sharri Addison, Lucinda Moore, Donnie McClurken, Bobby Jones, Jessica Reedy, and many more. JK advised that stars will want their face down by her, being that they are familiar with her work, but she will try and spread the stars out between her, I, and another makeup artist that usually assist her on projects name Triece. JK, was very kind and fair, yet fearless. She refuse to let anyone disrespect her staff and came to our defense if necessary. Sometimes stars can be divas and production staff can be nasty; however in this case everyone was wonderful. Everyone was very kind and appreciative of the staff JK put together as a glam squad for the show. We did not have any problems. If there were problems, JK was very professional and never showed it.
So, at this point I am guessing you would like to know who JK, put in my chair. Well, I was able to do Pastor Beverly Crawford, The Williams Brothers, Dietrick Haddon, Mryon Butler, and assisted JK in keeping Pastor Shirley Caesar touched up!!! All of them were a joy to work with and truly appreciated our services.  Pastor Beverly Crawford was one of my favorites to work with upon many. She was so appreciative of my makeup artistry and even loved my earrings (pic shown of us to the left of the blog). After she complimented me so much on them and said they would look good with her dress, I decided to let her use them to perform in the awards show. So, when you see her perform when the show broadcast, checkout her earrings!=0) I am working on getting her a pair of her own!!!
So, I wrote this blog to thank JK Hunter, Keno Hill aka "Barber to the Stars", and Central City Productions for the chance at working the Stellar Awards. Special thanks to Keno for JK's number!!!! However, All of this is not possible without GOD!!!

In this video they are rocking a hot red dresses with a beautiful red lip to match. Red lips are known to be very sexy and seductive. If you use the wrong red, it can look a little trashy.
